The Medical Laboratory Professionals’ Association of Ontario (MLPAO) is proud to celebrate Medical Laboratory Week which runs April 21st – 27th, 2019. The MLPAO has been representing medical laboratory professionals in Ontario since 1963.
These professionals serve in urban, rural and remote settings in the public and private sectors. Hospitals, physician offices, diagnostic laboratories, clinics, specimen collection sites, blood centers and fertility clinics all require the services of these professionals. There are just under 600 licensed laboratories and specimen collection centres serving patients across Ontario, with 6,500 practicing Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) and thousands of Medical Laboratory Assistants/Technicians (MLA/Ts).
“Ontario laboratory professionals are an essential part of our healthcare team, and as they often work behind the scenes, they are easily forgotten. This week is an opportunity to showcase our profession and appreciate the hard work that is done each and every day in Ontario laboratories,” says Michelle Hoad, MLPAO Chief Executive Officer.
During this week, across Ontario and the country, laboratory professionals participate in a variety of activities to help raise the profile of the profession and bring awareness to this essential health care team.
“Every day in Ontario over ½ a million laboratory tests are performed by qualified and certified laboratory professionals. From diagnosis to treatment, laboratory professionals play a vital role in each patient’s care. We need the public to be aware that healthcare is more than doctors and nurses,” says MLPAO Chair, Robert Scheuermann.
Medical Laboratory Week provides the opportunity to highlight the medical laboratory professionals working behind the scenes to ensure patients get the best care possible.
